Can anybody tell what what qualifications are needed for me to be able to train officers to level II NVQ so that they can apply for their SIA license. I have worked in-house for years and our security has recently been contracted out to a Facilities company who have no experience in manned guarding. I did want to contract out the training but I have been informed that it could be beneficial to the company if somebody within was qualified to do the training as they already have existing customers who they supply facilities maintenace to, who are intrested in handing over responsibility of their security officers. Unfortuantly I have no qualifications within the industry just vast amounts of experience. Any advise would be greatful.

The follwing courses should give you exemption from all or part of training requirements for Manned Guarding;
3 days Basic Job Training Award - SITO
3 days Basic Job Training Award - NOCN/SITO

2 day Basic Job Training Award - SITO (providing the security officer has remained in continuous employment since achievement)

2 day Basic Job Training Award - NOCN/SITO (providing the security officer has remained in continuous employment since achievement)

BTEC Intermediate Security Operations Award
NVQ Level 2 Security Guarding - SITO/City and Guilds/Edexcel
NVQ Level 2, Security, Safety & Loss Prevention - Edexcel
NVQ Level 2, Security, Safety & Loss Prevention - SITO/City and Guilds
SVQ Level 2, Security, Safety & Loss Prevention - SITO/SQA
Professional Guard Part 1 SITO/City and Guilds
Professional Guard Part 2 SITO/City and Guilds
IISec Diploma in Security Management - NCFE
IISec Certificate in Security Management - City and Guilds

Knowledge of the Professional Security Officer Level 2 - SITO/City and Guilds

Knowledge of the Professional Retail Security Officer Level 2 - SITO/City and Guilds

Knowledge of the Advanced Security Officer Level 3 - SITO/City and Guilds

Knowledge of Retail Store Guard Practices – SITO/City and Guilds

In addition, candidates will need to provide adequate identification and have a criminal records check completed.

Hi Slim,

Hello and welcome to the G of S.

If I understand your posting correctly, you wish to obtain the relevant qualifications to deliver the training necessary for your guards to apply for the SIA licence?

The minimum requirements to deliver this training are:

An acceptable and recognised qualification in teaching such as the City and Guilds 7302 (There are others but this may be the quickest to obtain).

An approved trainers qualification to deliver the Comms & Conflict management element. (for example the MAYBO/SITO certificate).

You will also require a recognised qualification to deliver training in the relevant sector of security.........Static and Patrol, Retail, Door Supervisor etc.

Most important is that you or your company will need to be registered with an awarding body such as the City and Guilds, NOCN, NCFE etc.

Without this association to an awarding body, any certification will not be accepted by the SIA for licensing purposes.

It may be quicker and less expensive for you to contract out your training as opposed to qualifying to be a trainer. It's less stressful too.

I am currently 17 and want to go into the industry as i like this kind of work as i did it when i was 16 and just left school i always remember my first site that i did i started at 12 noon and finished at 1.00am i remeber when it got dark getting a bit scared i walked out side and looked to my left and jumped out of my skin at my own reflection in the window. However i got used to working and was not scared and felt confident i espesialy like the sites with the good CCTV cameras the ones that you can move. however i will get to the point i want to go back into the industry i have had 6 months experiance in the industry and done retail parks, business parks, factorys, wherehouses, schools, building sites, shelterd housing, Keyholding. I want to know if there is any training that you can do when you are 17 so when you turn 18 you can go into the security industry as i had to stop security as my last employer was getting the licenses and i was 16 when i worked for him i also liked doing security as it boosted my confidence and communication skills and i felt at ease talkingt to other officers and members of the public as i am a shy person and in 9 months i will be 18

Hi CC,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but there is a minimum requirement that in order to gain the qulifications necessary, the candidate must be at least 18 years of age.
Any exam papers submitted on behalf of persons below that age would be rejected by the awarding body.

Chin up, 9 months will soon pass.

Thanks for the info do you know of any websites with revision regarding the SIA exams i have got a book called the proffesional security officer i think this book is for the NVQ exams i got this when i worked for my old firm i think its quite old know but it did help and give me ideas in my work.

I really wouldn't worry too much about reading up before you take your training.
For one, it will probably be out of date by the time you do it and anyway, your tutor will teach you everything you need to pass the exams.
It's not particularly difficult and you should be given course notes to study. If you read up on these each evening, it's a piece of cake.
