Completing Application Forms

Tips on filling out Application Forms:

In most cases, when filling out an application form, this is the first impression a prospective employer will have of you.

Many employers are asking applicants to fill out application forms prior to interview rather then sending a copy of their CV. Application forms are infact very useful from a organisations point of view as they ensure that all applicants provide exactly the same information which aids in the shortlist process. Application forms are designed to screen you out rather than to get you in so it is important to get it right!

Application Forms:

You may be filling out an application form which has been sent to you, but in some instances prospective employers may ask you to fill in an application form on site, prior to your interview. In this case, always make sure you are prepared and take all relevant information with you such as your CV, certificates, letters of reference, driving license, and national insurance number. Now you should be fully equipped to fill out your application form accurately.

** Top Tip: Research the company you are applying to before filling out the form to help you focus your answers on the individual company. This will help your application stand out.

Be neat – Use a black pen and write as clearly as possible. If you are filling the application form in at home it can be helpful to take a copy of the original and fill a spare one in first so that you are sure not to make any mistakes on the original. If not, don’t worry and take your time and pay attention to your spelling and punctuation.

Don’t be afraid to ask – If there are any abbreviations you are unsure of, don’t be afraid to ask the person who gave you the application form.

Complete all sections – Answer every question as accurately as you can. If it does not apply to you write “Not Applicable” or if you don’t wish to go into detail write “To be discussed at interview”

Focus on your strengths – Be sure to state all of your skills, experience and achievements by stating relevant qualifications, training courses and systems or equipment you have worked on.

Be accurate – Make sure all of your information is accurate and that dates are correct and match your CV.

References - Make sure you fill out the references section of your application form as this could hold up your application at a later stage. Also be sure to have contacted your referees before using them so that they are prepared for a phone call or letter in the post.

Take a copy - When you have completed your application form it is a good idea to take a photocopy so that you can refer to it prior to the interview.

Arriving on time - make sure you get your application form in before the closing date and allow extra time for slow postage (always send first class) – if you think you may miss the deadline call the company and ask if you can fax through your application form.
