A HEROIC security officer bravely wrestled a gun off an armed robber in the middle of a Streatham street.
The robber's pistol was left lying in Kingscourt Road after the security officer was attacked outside the Chelsea Building Society in Streatham High Road at around 4.30pm on Monday.
The robber, who smashed the security officer on the head with the gun, fled the scene empty-handed.
Customer Tom Wilkins, 27, of Gleneldon Road, Streatham, said: "I was only in the Building Society five minutes ago but I left to buy some cigarettes. "Then I came back and there were police everywhere and a gun on the pavement."
A spokesman for G4S Cash Services said the guard was not seriously injured during the struggle. He said: "G4S Cash Services is committed to maintaining the safety of its staff and the public. As such, we are in regular discussions with trade unions, the police, the Government and local authorities to develop initiatives that will curtail the growing number of attacks taking place on the cash-in-transit industry."
It was the second armed robbery on the high road within 10 days.
On Friday, May 5, a Securicor van was attacked outside Lloyds TSB at around noon. That time robbers made off with about £25,000.
